The MEDRC Stabilization
Mechanism Project
Effective Multilateral Platforms in
Transboundary Environmental Diplomacy
Our Aim
Transboundary Environmental Issues
in the Service of a Peace Process
For states engaged in peace processes, transboundary environmental issues such as water, climate change and desertification may present opportunities for potential peace initiatives. From international declarations to guiding principles to treaties to shared management and resilient diplomatic contact, the potential of transboundary environmental issues as a tool for peace initiatives in a situation of conflict between two or more countries is often advanced.
The advancement of practical and replicable mechanisms in international relations to fulfill this potential of transboundary environmental issues in the service of a peace process, however, is rare.
With support from the German Federal Foreign Office, MEDRC's Stabilization Mechanism Project aims to capture and communicate the potential of the MEDRC model to be transferred or replicated to other contexts where a multilateral platform could positively serve a peace process.

About the MEDRC Stabilization Mechanism Project
The Stabilization Mechanism is a multi-year research project based
around developing MEDRC’s third mandate – To be a model
organization for states seeking to use transboundary environmental
issues in the service of a peace process.
Project Timeline
Bringing conflicting countries together
with ongoing research and
engagement
MEDRC held its first of a series of webinars looking at dimensions of environmental peacebuilding, particularly how transboundary issues can be used in the service of a peace process. We had some awesome insights shared by Sabine Blumstein, Tobias Ide and Nidhi Nagabhatla on what institutional factors have enabled resilient interstate cooperation in transboundary waters.
Phase 1
In 2021 an independent review and evaluation conducted on the MEDRC model confirmed the potential of the MEDRC multilateral approach to be implements in several international conflict areas.
Phase 2
From 2022 onwards, MEDRC will engage in continuous outreach, research, and dissemination to further unpack its model and determine whether project developments can be replicated or transfered in other contexts.Phase 3
At the end of 2023, another external evaluation will take place to gauge the research findings and to determine additional opportunities for the developments that have been established.
